I did some volunteer work planting several trees on a property. Holes were dug to two feet deep. The bottom 8 inches were filled with composted mulch and mixed with some native soil. The trees (25 gallon pots, 5-10 feet tall trees) were set in each hole just below ground level, A perforated PVC pipe was set at the edge of each hole leading to the bottom of the hole to allow for deep watering. Soil and mulch mixture was packed around the root ball. Drip lines were run from existing sprinkler locations to each tree. A layer of wood chip mulch was placed around the top.
